Entry 8 -- Lord of the Flies

Entry of your choice

This book Lord of the Flies weren't the book that drew me into attention at the first when we received the blog assignment from Mrs. McAllister, because I thought the book was about some flies after I read the title of the book. So I read three books, Enders Game, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451 first, but my ambition didn't seem to satisfy just by reading three books. So I reluctantly read this book. Unlike my thought and judgement I gave to this book before reading, this story was incredible. I found the author William Gerald Golding an astounding author. The main characters weren't flies, but humans. After finish reading this book, I think I realized that the flies mentioned on the title represent the stupid children locked inside the island. The lord from the title represented the leader, I think. The story was depressing and frustrating, but had some beautiful moments inside it. I loved the story.

Entry 7 -- Lord of the Flies

Are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.

The most memorable part was of course when Piggy was killed, but since I have already mentioned before quite a few times, I won't need to describe why.
I found the parts where Jack and his followers hunting the pig the most disturbing inside the story. They were of course hunting the animals for their survival, but still I didn't like Jack at the first, and I don't like his attitude toward his enemies.
The part when Ralph wept for the wise friend Piggy were beautiful to me. I could feel Ralph's love toward the Piggy.

Entry 6 -- Lord of the Flies

Please choose one passage from the novel that is significant to you. why is this passage meaningful? Please type it into one of your entries and comment on what you think about the passage.

"Piggy's arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig's after it has been killed." Chapter 11, pg. 165.
This quote is all about the description of Piggy body after he is killed. This quote is meaningful to me because it describes the remain of the last friend of Ralph. I wonder how Ralph felt when he sees Piggy, his last friend, lying dead like this.

Entry 5 -- Lord of the Flies

What is the mood of this novel? do you find this novel saddens you in any way? why?

The mood for this novel is very frustrating and depressing. I found it sadden me when Ralph's last follower Piggy is killed by his opponent, Jack. I know what it feels to be alone and lots of enemies. The loneliness cannot be described in words.

Entry 4 -- Lord of the Flies

What is the climax of this novel? what happens? how do the events of this novel make you feel?

I think the climax of this novel is when Piggy, the last follower of Ralph, was killed by the Jack gangsters. Ralph remains alone on the beach side of the island, feeling disastrous but exasperated inside his heart toward Jack. He failed to be a good leader. This event also made me frustrated and lonely.

Entry 3 -- Lord of the Flies

Who are the main characters in the novel? do you like them? why or why not? what is special about them? what do they reveal about the universal human experience?

The main characters are Ralph, Jack, and Piggy.
I like Piggy, but I don't like Ralph and Jack. The reason for that is because Ralph and Jack were like the leaders of each side, and they fought each other to accomplish their ambitions while Piggy was one of Ralph's friend, and he was killed by Jack because he took the side of Ralph consistently.
Piggy is special because he was the only one with consistent mind. He had made his decision to follow Ralph whatever happens, and that led him to death. Ralph and Jack are special because they were the leaders of each group of kids. Ralph wanted to stay along the beach because he wanted to be saved as soon as possible. He gathered up some kids that had similar thoughts as himself, and became the leader of the kids. He had an ambition. He wanted to be the one who leads the kids for resque, and be admired by the kids. Meanwhile Jack thought differently. He thought he needed to hunt animals and gather food to survive. He gathered up the kids that wanted to join him, and they formed to become gangsters. Jack also was very ambitious. He wanted to bring Ralph down and make him feel ashamed and embarrased in front of the children. As leaders, both Ralph and Jack were extraordinary, but they weren't very good as humans. Many kids, including innocent Simon, have been sacrificed during the fight between Ralph and Jack.
The fight between the two children, Jack and Ralph, remind me of real historical events occured in this world. One event is the Cold War between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Sociallist Republics. The war threats between each country's leaders required much weaponry and money. The ones who suffer from the Cold War were the citizens in each country. The situation was even worse during the World War II. The people who were the main cause for the war were the leaders of the countries including Adolf Hitler, Musolini, and Franklin Roosevelt. Because of those people, many European and American soldiers were perished. The only fault they had were that they were the citizens of their own countries, and because of it, they lost their lives. I think this story tells us that the fight between the leaders can give great damage to the followers.

Entry 2 -- Lord of the Flies

Are there are any current situations in the world that relate to the novel? what are they, and how do they relate? does the novel shed any light on how current situations could be resolved or "fixed"?

I don't know what's happening in this world. I don't watch news or read newspapers very often, but I can relate some events that have occured recently. On the news about three years ago, I heard that a twenty-year-old Korean guy murdered his father because he didn't want to serve in the Korean army. The guy has killed other person for his own sake. (actually he wasn't even sure that he would die if he goes to the army or not) I hear lots of news about people committing crimes that seem to sound barbaric and ridiculous.

Entry 1 -- Lord of the Flies

What is the major theme of this novel? why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

The theme of this novel is all about human instincts. The children including Jack have been turned out into barbarians without common rules that humans have created. This is important to the teenagers living in 2007 because these days the children are losing the concept of the rules. Many children are breaking major and minor rules. They should realize the importance of the rules and know that rules exist for the human beings' own benefits.
